# How to sell a trading card collection without getting lowballed

Know what you have before anyone makes an offer: identify each card's exact printing, price the valuable ones on recent sold listings, and separate the few cards worth real money from the bulk. Then sell each part where it gets the best price — the best cards on their own, the rest as lots.

Step by step

## From a box of cards to a fair sale.

1. **Sort before you price.** Group by game and set. Sleeve anything that looks special; keep everything out of rubber bands.
2. **Identify the exact printing.** The same card can be a 1st Edition, a reprint, a holo or a non-holo, at very different prices. See [1st Edition vs Unlimited](https://cardinal-app.ai/guides/1st-edition-vs-unlimited/).
3. **Price on sold listings, not asking prices.** Recent completed sales for the same printing in similar condition are the market.
4. **Pull out the few cards worth real money.** In most collections a handful of cards carry most of the value.
5. **Decide whether any are worth grading first.** A high grade can multiply a card's price, but only for valuable, clean cards — see [is it worth grading?](https://cardinal-app.ai/is-it-worth-grading/)
6. **Sell the rest as lots,** grouped by game or set.

Where to sell

## Each option, and its trade-off.

- **Online marketplaces:** usually the highest prices for individual cards, but you handle listings, photos, shipping and fees.
- **Local card shops and buylists:** fast and simple, but a shop needs margin, so a cash offer is usually well under recent sold prices.
- **Card shows:** many buyers in one place to compare offers — bring your price list.
- **Consignment:** someone else sells for a share of the price — less work, slower, and you depend on their reach.

Offers

## Handling offers and avoiding scams.

- **Get more than one offer** for valuable cards, and know your numbers before you hear any.
- **Never bundle a valuable card into a bulk lot** — it hands its value to the buyer.
- **Ignore unsolicited messages** from strangers who saw you post a collection online.
- **Use payment methods with protection,** and ship valuable cards with tracking and insurance.

Cardinal identifies each card you scan, lets you pick the exact printing, prices it raw and at every grade, and keeps a running total of your collection. See also [what are my cards worth?](https://cardinal-app.ai/what-are-my-cards-worth/)
